As New York fashion week starts today – we bring you the five most talked-about upcoming shows and major events that will have the front row on tenterhooks.

1. Carine Roitfeld's new magazine

If you're a true Roitfeld fan then, you'll know that the former Vogue Paris editor (whose departure from the Condé Nast family is still talked about two years later), is launching her new magazine in the middle of fashion week. Like me, you've probably watched the "making of Carine's magazine issue 0" video – featuring models in blunt, black wigs – five times for clues of what to expect. Here's the little that what we do know: the magazine will be called CR Fashion Book, its 228 pages and its offices are based at the newly launched Standard Hotel East Village (formerly the Cooper Square Hotel), which has some stunning views of the city.

For content – we know, thanks to The Cut blog, that the editor's letter is dedicated to birth and inspired by her daughter Julia's recent pregnancy. For more, we'll have to wait and see but – with the team behind Visionaire and V magazine working on it – it's bound to be a guaranteed fashion hit.

2. Katie Holmes' show

For those of us who love a glossy magazine, she's the former Mrs Tom Cruise, and for those of the 90s generation with a penchant for long words spouted by teenagers, she's Joey – the brown-haired girl from Dawson's Creek who Dawson always pined for. You may not know that Katie Holmes makes up part of Holmes & Yang – an upscale label that will have its first runway show at this year's NYFW. We know from celebrity designers who have gone before her that there is a yardstick – at one end Victoria Beckham, whose VB collection is stunning, wearable and a hit with editors, and then there's Kanye.

3. Diana Vreeland's star-studded film premiere at Moma

Fashion films are having a moment – and if you still have The September Issue on loop, then you may want to give your DVD player a break and take a peek at the new film Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel. Esteemed editor – Vreeland was both a Vogue and Harper's Bazaar alumni (she was fashion editor of Bazaar for 26 years, wow) – the film tells of her early life and role at those two iconic publications. W magazine is hosting a screening of the film at Moma in the middle of fashion week.

4. Lady Gaga perfume launch

You may have been wondering where in Manhattan you could find a building that's as eclectic and unique as Gaga and her little monsters to host the launch of her perfume Fame. It's fitting then that the Guggenheim museum, which stands out by Central Park thanks to its distinctive circular design, has stepped in to take the pressure off. Fashion week is set to end with a bang thanks to Gaga's launch on 13 September with the fragrance launch and accompanying Steven Klein campaign film. I wonder if Gaga will invite us all back to her parents' new restaurant Joanne, for food after?

5. Betsey Johnson's retrospective runway show

If you heard the news about Betsey Johnson's label LCC filing for bankruptcy in May and worried that you might never have another reason to dust off your bright, pink underskirt and watch Betsey cartwheel down the runway – fear not, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Betsey is doing a catwalk show with a difference this season – the 11 September event will be a retrospective – featuring collections worn by fans from the 60, 70s and 80s, with Cyndi Lauper rumoured to perform.

We can't wait.
