Brisbane festival 2014: one perfect day

Want to maximise your festival fun? Circle Saturday 20 September in the diary. You’ll need skates to zoom between venues, but it’s the day to experience the best of Brisbane, writes Alexandra Spring

10am Goa Billboard Project

Start off with this free exhibition reflecting on the centenary of the Anzac tradition, as seen through the lenses of professional, amateur and school-age photographers.
17-27 September, 10am-4pm, Judith Wright Centre

11am Kaput

This all-ages show, last seen at the Sydney festival, sees circus performer Tom Flanagan celebrating the joy of slapstick maestros Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin with a madcap clowning romp.
20-21 September, 11am, 1pm, the Telstra Spiegeltent

12pm Exxopolis: Architects of Air

Get lost before lunch in this multicoloured inflatable walk-in sculpture that has won fans around the world. Made of tiny pieces of coloured plastic, the pattern of its stained-glass perpendicular windows is similar to Islamic tile designs.
6-26 September, all day, the Telstra Spiegeltent Garden Bar

2pm Deluge

Time to get serious. The Queensland floods devastated the state but inspired its artists. This experimental piece, created by Australian and Korean dancers, draws on myths and rituals to examine the inescapable power of mother nature.
18-20 September, 2pm, 7.30pm, Powerhouse Theatre, Brisbane Powerhouse

3pm QUT Sessions

Catch the next big thing at the free showcase of talent coming out of Queensland University of Technology. Singer-songwriter Charlotte Emily shows off her boho charm while folk five-piece Curious Finch demonstrate their djembe and ukulele talents.
13 and 20 September, 3pm, The Telstra Spiegeltent

4pm Soap

More fun than your average dip in the tub, Soap mixes circus, comedy and acrobatics with sexy charm and great music thrown in for good measure. Just avoid the front row unless you have your brolly.
10-21 September, 4pm, 7.30pm, the Courier-Mail Piazza, South Bank

5pm Twilight Music Series

Pop in for a taste of rising star Daniel Lee Kendall’s latest tunes and a picnic sandwich on the banks of the Brisbane river as the sun sets.
6-26 September, 5-7pm, River Quay Green, South Bank

5:30pm Limbo

Fire-breathers, knife throwers, sword swallowers – Limbo may sound like a regular circus, but the added frisson of danger and chemistry between performers will have you on the edge of your seat.
5-27 September, 5.30pm, 9.30pm, The Telstra Spiegeltent

6:30pm Tawdry Heartburn’s Manic Cures

Bare your soul and your unclipped cuticles to six-foot-five nail technician Tawdry Heartburn. After a short burst of confession, leave an anonymous secret in his mechanical ‘gossip machine’ – if you dare.
9-27 September, 15 mins each, Theatre Republic The Parade Ground

8pm The Perfect American

Turns out Walt Disney wasn’t cryogenically frozen when he died (he was cremated), but he did lead an extraordinary life. Philip Glass imagines his final months in this dramatic opera, including fanciful encounters with Abraham Lincoln and Andy Warhol. It divided critics in Madrid and London but now gets its Australian premiere.
15-20 September, 6.30pm, 8pm, QPAC Concert Hall

8.30pm American Music Club

Continue the Stateside fix with a late-night session of Latin, dance and big band tunes performed by local Brisbane artists.
15-27 September, 8.30pm, QPAC Cascade Court

11:45pm Dune Rats

Pure punk: Dune Rats.

End the night on a high. The Brissie punk kids will storm the Spiegeltent with the same verve employed at SXSW, Splendour in the Grass and Sound City, which saw their debut album jump to the top of the alternative charts.
20 September, 11.45pm, the Telstra Spiegeltent
