Cerys Matthews: songs to mend a broken heart

What becomes of the brokenhearted? They should play some banging tunes, advises our musical agony aunt’s alter ego Dr Crotchety

I have broken up with the love of my life and need musical solace. Do you have an ultimate break-up playlist?

Doctor’s orders: lock yourself up, pyjamas on, tequila and ice-cream to hand. Put Grease on repeat on the TV, and blast out I Will Survive – not Gloria Gaynor, though: you need the Cake cover: “Did you think I’d crumble?/Did you think I’d lay down and die?” Follow up with Dusty Springfield’s I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, then Radiohead’s OK Computer in its entirety.

In essence, surrender the next 24 hours and reduce yourself to the dribble-like state of post-gig drummers. Indulge in abject self-pity and an array of guilty pleasures, then decide it’s over. Life’s too short not to keep riding that wave.

Now start playing the A-list of feelgood albums: A Nod Is As Good As A Wink… To A Blind Horse, by the Faces, Johnny Cash’s Out Among The Stars (a recently rediscovered collection of recordings produced by the legendary Billy Sherrill in the early 1980s) and Tiger’s Milk Records’ new compilation of vintage Peruvian funk, Peru Bravo. Who needs love when you have tunes such as these pumping out of your stereo? For some glorious warmth from Mali, try Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako, featuring Salif Keita.

Finally, get yourself and your shiny new collection out in your charabanc. Go and buy the new season’s kit from your local football club, or look for your local equivalent to Huddersfield’s Tea and Tarts or Buns & Roses in Leeds, the new breed of the WI. Attend talks, fill that beautiful brain with information about this wonderful world of ours, turn up the volume on Sturgill Simpson’s Living The Dream, and just hold tight.
