Singing is a confidence thing. I didn't grow up a confident singer – I'm not even a confident singer now. But what I've always been passionate about is people singing together. Throughout my life, I've been in loads of choirs and singing groups, and it's my favourite kind of singing. When you sing with a group of people, there is a different sort of confidence. Something about being lost in the sound, and being part of that blend of different voices, is good training for your voice.

We live in the culture of The X-Factor, where everyone wants to sing. But I long for the days when I was a kid, and we would sing in school as a group every day. We were encouraged to sing with energy and purpose, not focusing on the sound of our own voice, but on the sound of the group. I would encourage anyone who is scared of singing to get together with like-minded people, and sing with them. So much confidence comes from making a sound as a community.
