Conor Oberst and Jenny Lewis have revealed the existence of Blood on the 4-Tracks, an unreleased collaboration album recorded more than a decade ago. Parts of the “weird” full-length could be released, Oberst suggested, on “edible” 7in singles.

The two singer-songwriters recorded the album in 2003, at Lewis’s “very cute but kinda run-down” apartment in Los Angeles, they told Noisey in a new interview. Working with Jimmy Tamborello, the electronic musician best known for his work with Dntel and the Postal Service, the duo “stayed up for like two days and made a weird record I don’t think I’ve ever heard since then,” Oberst said.

Coloured by what had been the very recent death of singer Elliott Smith, “It was a sad, emotional time for us,” Lewis admitted. Two of the album’s songs were later re-recorded and released by the musicians’ principal projects: Gold Mine Gutted, on Bright Eyes’ Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, and It Just Is – a tribute to Smith – on Rilo Kiley’s More Adventurous.

Lewis also proposed that they could resurrect the long-lost album and finally put it out. “I’d be into it as long as it’s [as] some kind of edible 7in or something,” Oberst replied. “We can talk to Jack [White] about making us an edible 7in.” Lewis seems seduced by the idea of a tasty, Third Man novelty record: “[Yes,] we want a ‘fruit roll-up’ 7in of Blood on the 4-Tracks.”

Oberst, who has also recorded albums with Monsters of Folk, the Desaparecidos, Park Ave, Commander Venus, and under his own name, most recently released Upside Down Mountain in May. Lewis’s latest, third solo album, The Voyager, came out in July.
