This morning it was reported in the Times that Michael Gove had fallen victim to that most embarrassing of moments, when his phone went off in an important meeting. In his case, the weekly cabinet meeting. What gave him away to fellow ministers, apparently, was his highly distinctive ringtone. Gove has refused to reveal what this is, describing it as “an in-joke”, while observers variously and intriguingly described it as being “Jazz FM-style comedown music after a heavy night out” and a “female ballad”.
Whatever it is, it reportedly led to a stiff reminder from David Cameron that Gove, the chief whip, should henceforth leave his phone outside. All of which leaves us wondering: what is the offending ringtone?
